With a winter pool enclosure you are able to enjoy your pool all year round. Nice, right?
When we say swimming in the winter, we do not mean swimming in bath water in freezing cold water. Not at all. In fact, we talk about having a running pool during winter and swimming in warm, nice water and climate.
Can you swim comfortably in the winter?
There are many benefits to having a winter pool enclosure, but one of the best things about it is that it makes swimming in the winter not only possible but pleasant, too!
Consider yourself an avid, dedicated swimmer that would swim 2 hours a day. Although ambitious, let’s consider that for the moment. This means that for the other 22 hours of the day the pool is not in use. During the summer, it is easy to keep your pool water warm because it’s heated by the sun. What about the winter?
You can winterize your pool, or you can just keep swimming and even save on energy costs and water loss!
How does the winter pool enclosure help to swim all year round?
The DynaDome enclosure acts as a greenhouse in the summer but during the winter as well by way of the greenhouse effect.
*greenhouse effect – “the trapping of the sun’s warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.” (Oxford dictionary)
This translates to a significant decrease in your energy costs.
The polycarbonate walls of our outdoor swimming pool domes trap warm air heated by the sun. They keep the air at a constant and relatively comfortable temperature as long as the winter pool enclosure is in an extended condition. The combination of the radiant heat from the pool and the greenhouse effect ensures enough warmth. Still, depending on your personal preference and location you might need heat from a secondary source. It will create a pleasant environment for swimming – even on the chilliest days of winter.
Do you need a pool cover?
There are plenty of ways to keep your pool water warm during the winter. Using a heater will be necessary, but when not in use, we definitely recommend covering it with a solar cover. The cover will help keep the pool from losing any heat to the air through evaporation, which can account for up to 70% of heat loss.
A solar cover will also minimize the condensation within the pool area, which is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of your enclosure. This is very important to prevent any visits from Jack Frost and external wall freezing, which can lead to costly repairs. Additionally, a solar cover reduces the amount of debris that can accumulate in your pool, making maintenance easier and ensuring your pool stays clean and ready for use. By investing in a quality solar cover, you can enhance the efficiency of your heating system and extend the swimming season, even in colder months.
How warm is warm enough inside the winter pool enclosure?
For most people, the ideal temperature inside the space during non-summer days is 74 degrees. It’s like a nice spring day in the middle of winter. Isn’t that great!
In Northwest Indiana (headquarters of DynaDome) it was 15 degrees outside in January. Yet, because of the heat retention properties of the DynaDome, the temperature inside the enclosure on that same day was actually 75 degrees!
